Influential Student Media Director at U. Texas Steps Down

September 25, 2009

The Daily Texan reports that University of Texas Student Media Director Kathy Lawrence plans to retire after 15 years working in the position, citing health issues.

While working as Texas Student Media director, Lawrence oversaw outsourcing of the paper’s printing operations to the Austin American-Statesman. She also advocated for the paper’s right to publish freely, instead of being subject to prior review.

In the article, Lawrence called it her “greatest achievement.” “When I got here, I had no idea that practice was still going on at the University of Texas. I had no idea it was going to take 12 years to eliminate, and I was completely elated when I found out the [TSM] Board eliminated it,” she said.

Texas Student Media oversees multiple college news outlets at the University of Texas-Austin, including The Daily Texan, the Texas Travesty and Texas Student Television.

“For years, Kathy has been one of the most powerful voices in college media,” UWIRE CEO Joe Weasel said. “It’s difficult to overstate the impact she had on hundreds if not thousands of students over her career, as well as the field of campus journalism.”
